BIS Hallmarking

Hallmarking of a gold jewellery is a certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) confirming that the gold is of a particular purity. Effective from June 16, 2021, the central government made the hallmarking of gold mandatory. This means that any gold jewellery sold by a jeweller in India must have BIS hallmarking to certify the product's purity. Further, from April 1, 2023, any gold jeweller in India cannot sell gold jewellery without it having a 6-digit HUID number.

Further, effective from July 1, 2021, the government has revised the signs of hallmarking on gold jewellery. As per the Department of Consumer Affairs, now BIS hallmark on gold jewellery will consist of three symbols:

a) BIS Standard mark.

b) Purity/Fineness Grade and.

c) 6-digit alpha-numeric code, also known as HUID number
