Quick Answer

EPR registration for e-waste is a mandatory CPCB authorization that every producer, importer and brand owner of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) must obtain under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022. It applies to anyone who manufactures, imports or sells listed electronics in India - and from 2026, e-waste EPR data is being linked with customs and BIS records, so products without it can face import-clearance issues. Standphill India handles the entire CPCB process end-to-end. Call +91-9667674225.

India is now one of the world's largest generators of electronic waste, with volumes running into well over a million tonnes a year and climbing fast as phones, laptops, appliances and gadgets flood the market. Behind every device is a producer or importer, and the law holds them responsible for what happens when that device reaches end of life. The mechanism is EPR registration for e-waste - a CPCB authorization under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 that obliges you to ensure a defined share of your products are collected and recycled each year.

E-waste EPR applies to anyone who places electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) listed in Schedule I of the rules onto the Indian market. That includes domestic manufacturers, brand owners selling under their own label, and - very importantly - importers, including foreign brands selling electronics into India through an Indian entity. If you import gadgets, appliances, IT hardware or their components for sale, e-waste EPR is not optional; it is a precondition for doing business.

The scope is also expanding. Solar photovoltaic modules and lithium-ion batteries are being drawn into the e-waste/EPR orbit through linked rules, and from 2026 CPCB is cross-checking EPR registration against customs and BIS databases - meaning a product without valid e-waste EPR can be held up at import clearance. As part of the wider EPR registration framework, Standphill India manages your e-waste EPR registration, target planning and annual returns end-to-end.

What is EPR Registration for E-Waste?

EPR registration for e-waste is the CPCB authorization that makes producers and importers of electronics legally responsible for the safe collection, recycling and disposal of their products once they become waste. It is mandated under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 (which replaced the earlier 2016 rules), enforced by CPCB on behalf of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

The rules apply to electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) listed in Schedule I - a wide list spanning IT and telecom equipment, consumer electronics, large and small household appliances, lighting, tools, medical devices and more. Each producer is assigned annual e-waste collection and recycling targets, expressed as a percentage of the quantity they placed on the market in earlier years, and these targets rise over time (commonly starting around 60% and scaling upward).

To meet targets, producers work with registered recyclers and accumulate EPR certificates / credits that prove the equivalent quantity of e-waste was recycled. The whole system runs on CPCB's online e-waste EPR portal with digital traceability, so accurate registration and return-filing are essential. Standphill India manages this complete cycle for you.

Who Needs E-Waste EPR Registration?

E-waste EPR obligations fall on those who place electronics on the Indian market. The main obligated roles are:

Producers

Makers of EEE listed in Schedule I

Importers

Importers of electronics & components

Brand Owners

Selling electronics under own brand

Recyclers / Refurbishers

Registered e-waste handlers

A key point for global companies: an importer or foreign brand selling electronics into India is an obligated producer for e-waste EPR, even though manufacturing happens abroad - the responsibility attaches to whoever places the goods on the Indian market through their Indian entity. E-commerce sellers of electronics are also increasingly covered. Standphill India confirms exactly how your business is classified.

E-waste EPR is filed on the CPCB e-waste EPR portal. The path to your registration runs through these stages, all handled by Standphill India:

A clean application is usually approved in 15-30 working days; queries can extend it to 35-40 days. For e-waste, the most common pitfalls are misclassifying your product against Schedule I, mis-stating historical quantities used to compute targets, and PAN/GST name mismatches. We resolve all of these before filing.

Documents Required for E-Waste EPR

The core documents CPCB expects for e-waste EPR are straightforward when prepared correctly and consistently:

  • Company PAN, GST and CIN / incorporation documents
  • Import Export Code (IEC) - for importers
  • Authorised signatory ID and authorisation letter
  • Product list mapped to Schedule I EEE categories
  • Sales / placed-on-market quantity data (for target computation)
  • Tie-up agreements with CPCB-registered e-waste recyclers
  • EPR plan with annual collection & recycling targets

Schedule I mapping is decisive: your e-waste targets depend on correctly classifying each product against the Schedule I EEE list and accurately reporting the quantities you placed on the market. Mistakes here lead to wrong targets, queries, or re-registration. Standphill India maps your product range precisely before submission.

Non-compliance with e-waste EPR carries both financial and operational consequences. CPCB can levy Environmental Compensation for failing to register or meet targets, and from 2026 the bigger risk for many businesses is operational: with EPR data linked to customs and BIS, electronics without valid e-waste EPR can be stopped at import clearance. Producer Responsibility Organisations acting on behalf of brands now also face direct CPCB scrutiny and audited reporting, so shortcuts are increasingly exposed. Standphill India keeps your registration valid, your targets met and your returns filed, so your imports keep moving and your compliance stands up to scrutiny.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, EPR registration is mandatory for all producers, importers and brand owners of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) listed in Schedule I. Anyone who manufactures, imports or sells listed electronics in India must hold a valid e-waste EPR registration. From 2026, the registration is also linked to customs and BIS, so unregistered products can face import-clearance issues.
Producers (manufacturers) of EEE, importers of electronics and components, brand owners selling electronics under their own label, and increasingly e-commerce sellers of electronics all need e-waste EPR. Importers and foreign brands selling into India are treated as obligated producers even though manufacturing happens abroad. Registered recyclers and refurbishers also register. Standphill India confirms your classification.
E-waste EPR covers electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) listed in Schedule I of the E-Waste Rules 2022 - a wide range including IT and telecom equipment, consumer electronics, household appliances, lighting, tools and medical devices. Solar PV modules and lithium-ion batteries are also being brought into the wider EPR framework through linked rules. Standphill India maps your exact products to the Schedule.
Your annual e-waste collection and recycling targets are calculated as a percentage of the quantity of electronics you placed on the market in earlier reference years. These percentages rise over time (commonly starting around 60% and scaling upward). Accurate product classification and quantity reporting are essential to get the right targets. Standphill India computes and plans these for you.
A complete, correctly prepared e-waste EPR application is typically approved in 15 to 30 working days. Applications with CPCB queries - usually from product misclassification, quantity errors, or PAN/GST mismatches - can take 35 to 40 working days. Standphill India prevents these issues so your registration is granted as quickly as possible, keeping your imports moving.
